Biome in a Box Project

Students are asked to build a three-dimensional model of a biome in a box (larger than a shoebox) using everyday materials. Included in the model should be representative examples of flora and fauna, and it should show the terrain (mountainous, flat, shoreline, etc.). The inside walls of the box should be decorated (painted, collaged with photos, etc.). Taped onto one side of the box should be a written description of all of the characteristics of the biome (elevation, precipitation levels, temperature, flora, fauna, etc.). Taped onto the other side of the box is a world map indicating (by color, outline, etc.) the locations of this biome.

Technology in the classroom is not a new idea...

Opinions on the use of technology in the classroom

Teachers must understand that ever-changing technologies affect the ways in which students may demonstrate their competencies in such areas as, creativity, critical thinking, research, communication, and all other areas that demand a type of literacy.
I believe that technology’s role in education is to provide assistance in the learning process in a real world way.  In other words, students use technology every day, and by continuing its use in the classroom there is no break in the familiarization of how they experience reality and investigate their world.  Because the realities of technology are so ubiquitous to today’s students, motivation to learn is strongly tied to its familiar assistances.
I believe that using technology in a much too passive manner, such as watching TV or podcasts, do not afford much in the way increasing test scores, however, the usefulness may be better seen in the motivation to learn, assisting special needs children, organization of materials, and as basically servile to teacher guidance.  I view technology as tools and opportunity providers.

Welcome to Project Life Science

Dear readers,

Today begins my evolution in scientific discussion through the use of contemporary technology.

I will be submitting new information, fun facts, and attempt answering questions that were omitted in class due to time constraints.

Feel free to post your comments as we collaborate and explore the marvels of life science.

Sincerely,

Mr. Wilson
